Pottstown Children Help Others In Need
Students collected hats and gloves for organizations including the Pottstown Salvation Army.
From Pottstown School District Director of Community Relations John J. Armato:
Tina Ludy’s second grade students at Edgewood Elementary School were moved by a story they read about children helping others in need in the community. When they learned from Mrs. Ludy that there are children and families who do not have the good fortune to live in their own homes and many times are hungry and cold, they decided to take action. They developed their “Hands Helping Hands” project to collect gloves, mittens, and hats to help keep children warm during the winter.

The students also contacted Mr. Dennis Arms, the sponsor of the high school Key Club, and asked them to join hands and be partners in the collection project. The combined efforts of elementary and high school students were very successful with over 150 pairs of new gloves and mittens to go along with 50 hats and caps being collected.
The Edgewood Elementary library was the site of a special presentation where the students were able to meet Sister Christine Kranichfeld of St. Mary’s Franciscan Shelter of Phoenixville and Theresa Bradley of the Pottstown Salvation Army and present them with the collection of hats and gloves. In accepting the donations from the second graders and members of the high school Key Club, Sister Christine Kranichfeld expressed, “We are deeply appreciative of the efforts of these young people to play an active role in their community.”
