'Pottstown Has Some Great Small Businesses'

A letter to the editor ...

Dear Fellow Pottstown Community Members,

I would like to invite you to join in re-establishing a dedication to our community by embracing the importance of shopping locally FIRST - whenever possible!

Pottstown has some great small businesses that are striving to become established; they cannot do it without the support of their neighbors, friends and fellow community members.

I often hear from fellow Pottstonians that they wish there were more places to shop, eat, spend their money in Pottstown. Well, the truth of that matter is that there is little hope of a path being beaten by small business owners to Pottstown if our community isn't willing to financially support the great small businesses and "mom and pop shops" that we are so lucky to already have. However, imagine if Pottstown were to gain the reputation of being a community that supports our local businesses, first and foremost; that, I believe, would surely spread to those looking for a community to "set-up shop."

That said, I'm proposing that the Pottstown community starts our own 3/50 initiative, committing to the following ideas and principles, and helping to build a more sustainable Pottstown.

3/50 Project Principles:

Think of three businesses you'd hate to see disappear, then pop in and say hello.... Pick 3 each month. Spend 50. Save our local economy.

I have committed to doing this on behalf of myself and my family...will you?

I would also ask that you visit our "Re-Occupy Local Pottstown Businesses" Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/groups/pottstownspendlocal) and request to join. I'll be adding local business suggests; please feel free to do the same.

Details:

$20 is the weapon of choice for Re-Occupy Pottstown Local Businesses' next shop-local-first event, "Cash Mob." For each "cash mob" event there will be a prearranged meeting spot (our first "cash mob" location will be The Gallery on High on Saturday, December 3 at 11 am). We will meet with $20 in hand ready to be spent at the local business (anyone can spend more if you are able and would like, of course).

This is a great demonstration of how, with a focused, joint effort, each person's purchasing power can truly make a difference.

($20 x 15-20 = $300 to $400 - Now, that's a pretty decent local impact.)

Please forward this to all of you local friends and family, and encourage them to support our shop-local-first effort!

Power to the Pottstown People!
