Since March, more people are working from home than ever before. Most were not prepared for it. They work from the kitchen table, the couch, and the recliner to name the most obvious places, usually with laptops. Slumped, scrunched, and squinting they sit for hours at a time. If you were to ask me the surest way to develop back and neck pain, I would tell you to do that. To make things worse, most people already have posture problems. (If you would like me to analyze your posture via email, FREE OF CHARGE, CLICK HERE .)
Posture is the way our bodies balance themselves. No matter how bad you think your posture is, it's balanced, otherwise you would fall over. Whether you are sitting or standing, perfectly erect or slouching, your body will find its point of equilibrium and maintain it. It does this by contracting and relaxing muscles. If you habitually slump or lean in a certain way, over time this becomes a pattern. Certain muscles become habitually tight, while other weaken. The ligaments and other tissues that hold your body together shorten or overstretch. Over time, you stand, sit, and move according to this pattern. Weight lifting, running, or other forms of exercise will also follow this pattern. So, the muscles that are already doing most of the work will continue to do so, while the muscles that are under-performing will not get all that much benefit. You will just be reinforcing the pattern. Over time, this sets you up for injury, degeneration of discs and joints, and poor athletic performance. - If you work from home or spend more than an hour or so on a computer, invest in a good chair. I say "invest" because a good chair will repay you with dividends. You will avoid pain, degeneration of your joints, and the reduced energy you experience when you don't breathe fully due to slumping. You may also want a desk to go with it, although you may be able to get away with a table if space or money is tight.
