300+ Get A History Lesson On Segregation At Conestoga High

Tredyffrin/Easttown school board hosted a "Program of Acknowledgement" to honor Esther Long and the Heroes of the 1932-1934 School Fight.

TREDYFFRIN/EASTTOWN, PA — More than 300 people gathered on Saturday afternoon at Conestoga High School to participate in the Program of Acknowledgement in honor of Esther Long and the heroes of the 1932-34 'Berwyn School Fight.'

Tears, laughter, and applause filled the atrium as the audience was taken through the history of the 'Berwyn School Fight' and the school board’s ambitions to maintain diversity and equity in the school district.

The school board on April 24 passed a resolution acknowledging the harm and pain segregation caused the African American families in the district.

The program Saturday marked the 80th anniversary of Esther Long's graduation from the former Tredyffrin/Easttown High School.

Dignitaries present included Penny Washington, a local historian; school board members; African American Student Union representatives. Long and descendants of the other fighters.

The participants were showered with love and respect from the community, as they learned about the little-known Berwyn school desegregation fight.
