Downed and Bowed Trees, Power Outages Make For Eery, Dangerous Halloween Weekend Driving

Blackouts drive some onto to dark roads to pick up dinner or supplies but haging hazards lurk above roads while ice, snow and slush make for slippery conditions.

The snow really started piling up by 4 p.m. in Tredyffrin, adding to the slush that had been coming down all day.

At the a full complement of sand and plow trucks was steadily rolling back in from the road, loading up with sand and heading back out. Tredyffrin Township Manager Mimi Gleason told Patch Saturday that as many as ten trucks were on Saturday snow duty.

PennDOT trucks could be seen all over town too, plowing and sanding state road in Tredyffrin and Easttown including Routes 252, 202 and 30/Lancaster Ave.  As the sun was setting, the snow was piling up and the conditions were getting more trecherous, not only because of the slushy, icy snow but also because many street lights were off.

Downed power lines left  thousands of homes and businesses without power.  the actual number of homes without power was still unclear as of Saturday at 9 p.m.

The heavy snow broke limbs and brought down trees across power lines. Where trees did not break, many bowed. Trees on North Valley Forge Road and Berwyn Baptist Road (Near Conestoga) were arched down to a few feet off the ground.

As night fell, unsuspecting drivers were driving right into pine and other tree limbs that were not on the ground, but hovering above the road like so many haunting Halloween goblins, hitting drivers of small cars right in the windshield and right in the grilles of higher vehicles like pick-up trucks and SUV's.

Shortly after  7 p.m. overhead street lights were out along Lancaster Ave., making it very tough to see the slick spots. Driving along the pitch black stretch between Paoli and Berwyn Village was like something out of a Halloween movie.
