Former Conestoga Star Drafted by the NY Giants

Undrafted free agent and cancer survivor Mark Herzlich signs with the New York Giants.

He was a l multi-sport star, a Boston College linebacker, cancer survivor and now Mark Herzlich is a New York Giant.

Mark Herzlich made it official on his twitter page around 11 a.m. Tuesday. He tweeted "Mark Herzlich is a New York Giant!" Since then it's been a whirlwind day as Herzlich appeared on ESPN and then tweeted that he was going to the Philadelphia hat store Lids to find a Giants cap. Herzlich tweeted that he hoped there was a Giants hat there that would fit him as it was the only place he could even find a Giants cap. 

Despite signing with one of the Philadelphia Eagles arch rivals in the NFL East, it's a pretty good bet that Mark Herzlich will have devoted hometown fans along the Upper Main Line and around the country. His is a sports story right out of Hollywood.

An all star athlete in football and lacrosse at Conestoga, Herzlich went on to be a star linebacker at Boston College. He missed the entire 2009 season when he was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. He came back and played for Boston College's 2010 season. Tuesday morning on ESPN Herzllich said he has been in Florida since January getting himself in shape to play in the NFL.

Herzlich was not drafted in April before the NFL labor dispute which led to a four and a half month player lockout by team owners. Players signed a ten year deal with the NFL Monday and an accelerated draft started at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Herzlich, an undrafted free agent, had signed with the Giants by 11.

He will be with the Giants at training camp next week, trying to earn a place on the squad.
