Meehan: USPS Will Review Southeastern Closing
Congressman goes over USPS regional management's head in an effort to keep the facility open.
says the U.S. Postal Service's (USPS) Inspector General will review the decision to close the Southeastern Processing and Distribution Center in Wayne.
Meehan made the announcement Friday after getting word that the USPS will launch a new review of the plant. The freshman Republican requesting the review. In his letter to Williams, Meehan says "if the goal of the consolidation process is to promote efficiencies for customers and improve the Postal Service's fiscal situation then it defies common sense to close down an a highly efficient and productive facility."
The Urgency
The Southeastern facility employs about 700 people. Many would be moved to the Lindbergh Blvd. center by Philadelphia International Airport. Many others have told Patch they would most likely retire. It's not clear exactly how many jobs, if any, would simply be eliminated.

What Happens Next?
and move its operations to a regional center on Linbergh Boulevard near Philadelphia International Airport. While no date has been announced for the closing, the Postal Service has said none of the affected mail facilities would close before May 15.

Friday afternoon a spokeswoman for Meehan's office told TE Patch that the Inspector General's told the congressman the review would be done some time in April.
