'Van Gogh Up Close' at Tredyffrin Library
A one-night program will take you inside the tortured mind of the legendary artist.
The story of Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh is literally the stuff or art world legend. Van Gogh may be as famous for having lost his left ear to a razor sharp blade as he is for his artwork. Stories over the years have conflicted over exactly how Van Gogh's ear was severed. No matter how or why his ear was cut off, Van Gogh's art was strongly influenced by emotion.
Now you can learn much more about Van Gogh, his work, and a major exhibition currently featured at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Tredyffrin Public Library presents a visual lecture with Jennifer A. Thompson, Philadelphia Museum of Art Curator for the current exhibition Van Gogh Up Close, on Thursday, March 22, 7:30 p.m. at the Library, located at 582 Upper Gulph Road, Strafford.

According to a press release from the library:
The presentation is ideal for those who have seen Van Gogh Up Close at the Museum and would like to learn more or those who would like to prepare for a future visit. The exhibition at the museum until May 6, focuses on Van Gogh’s tumultuous later years, a period of feverish artistic experimentation that began when van Gogh left Antwerp for Paris in 1886 and continued until his death in Auvers in 1890.

Near the time of his death, Van Gogh adapted some unique techniques that brought intensity to his work, maximizing the impact of his brushwork and application of paint. He closed in on subjects focusing on patterns and color. The Philadelphia Museum of Art says Van Gogh was drawn powerfully to nature, his works—particularly those created in the years just before he took his own life—engage the viewer with the strength of his emotions.
