Old Fort Washington Elementary Sold, Will be Demolished

Superintendent Michael Pladus notifies Upper Dublin residents that the old Fort Washington Elementary School building has been sold and will be razed in June.

Information from Upper Dublin School District:

I hope this brief note finds you well.

As you may be aware, the old Fort Washington Elementary School on Madison Avenue has been sold and is scheduled to be razed sometime this month. The cornerstone of the building reveals an 1891 construction date, and this old building has certainly seen better days.

For historic, and perhaps, sentimental reasons, the District has contacted the developer who purchased the site from the Township in the hope of saving the lintel (a decorative architectural element often found over portals) over the main entrance that reads “Make that Spark of Learning Grow”.

It is interesting to ponder 122 years later whose vision it was to place that inscription over those doors, and what effect it might have had on the teachers who taught in those classrooms or the children who played in that playground, some of whom, I would imagine, left those safe and hallowed halls of learning to later find their place in the world, perhaps even on the battlefields of World War One.

As we look forward to Monday evening and the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2013 at 7 pm at Cardinal Stadium, we are reminded the fundamental things still do apply (as time goes by), and I hope that we as a school district did, indeed, help toMake that Spark of Learning Grow. Congratulations to all of this year’s graduates, here’s praying for blue skies…

Respectfully,

Michael Pladus, Superintendent of Schools

Editor's note: The building that has been sold is the old Fort Washington Elementary School on Madison Ave., not Fort Washington Elementary located on Ft. Washington Ave.
