Upper Dublin Plants 2000th Tree For Arbor Day [Photos]
The Shade Tree Commission planted a Bur Oak tree at the township building to celebrate Arbor Day.
The Upper Dublin Shade Tree Commission reached a milestone on Friday, planting its 2000th tree at the township building in celebration of Arbor Day.
"Since the Shade Tree Commission began work in 1994, we have planted, or given to Upper Dublin residents for planting, 2000 trees," said Steve Stone, chairman of the STC. "We wanted to mark that milestone with this special Bur Oak that we are planting today."
As township officials used the ceremonious shovels to fill in the ground, Park Manager Eric Ihlein, of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, presented the township with its 15th-consecutive Tree City USA award. The award recognizes communities for their "hard work and dedication to the urban forest."

"Upper Dublin continues the important tradition of planting trees, building a stronger community and observing Arbor Day," said Ihlein. "I applaud the time and commitment you have all made in this effort."
Arbor Day began in 1872, though it wasn't adopted as an official civic holiday until two years later. Pennsylvania recognized Arbor Day in 1941, dedicating the last Friday of every April to the planting of trees throughout the community.

"Other holidays celebrate the past, but Arbor Day is a celebration of the future," said Ihlein. "The trees planted today will benefit many people for years to come."
