Earth Day's origins date back to 1970, in what environmentalists say was a pivotal moment in the birth of the modern-day environmental movement, according to a website about Earth Day.

Organizers say that up until that point, many Americans, who were consuming vast amounts of leaded gas through "massive and inefficient automobiles," remained pretty oblivious about general environmental concerns and how pollution in the air affected individuals' health.

The website says that two decades later, in 1990, the Earth Day movement went global, helping to mobilize 200 million people in 141 countries and "lifting environmental issues onto the world stage."

According to organizers, Earth Day is now recognized as the world's largest secular observance, marked by more than a billion people each year as a "day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local policy changes."
