Letter to the Editor: Shame on Olympic Sponsorship

McDonald's cuisine doesn't quite resonate with athletic achievement.

To the Editor:

In consideration of the fact that fast-food titan McDonald's is a major sponsor of the Olympics, it is impossible to have respect for the  Olympic Committee, which has sold out to the highest bidder, providing another reason for me to have no interest in viewing the competition.

McDonald's personifies the statement regularly made by a renowned local natural healing doctor, "We are digging our graves with our teeth." The restaurant serves food that is short on nutrition and important fruits and vegetables, rather it is full of fat, salt, sugar and empty calories. Those who make a habit of dining at McDonald's can expect to have high rates of obesity and illness and to be malnourished.

Imagine the international outrage and condemnation that would ensue if a tobacco company were permitted to sponsor the Olympics. McDonald's sponsorship is not much better, and it is an international embarrassment to the United States.

If the fast-food chain were to be honest, it would note that for decades, it has been proudly serving junk to individuals who have no concern for their health.

In a free society, adults are free to make bad choices. Bad choices, however, should not be endorsed and promoted by the Olympics.
