Bucks Co. Launching Rent-Assistance Program

The $37 million program offers help with rent and utilities for renters who have lost income during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BUCKS COUNTY, PA — Bucks County on Wednesday announced the launch of a $37 million program to help residents behind on their rent and bills due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Bucks County Emergency Rental Assistance Program is run by the county's housing and community development department and uses federal relief funds.

Renters in Bucks County who have lost income or otherwise experienced money troubles as a result of the coronavirus may apply for help with their rent and utilities by visiting the Bucks County website.

They may apply for help with back rent as well as upcoming rent if they remain unable to pay, county officials said.

"Whether it's job loss, medical bills or caring for ill loved ones, there are many ways this pandemic has upended life for Bucks County residents," said Jeffrey Fields, Director of Housing and Community Development. "The BERA program's goal is to stop evictions and displacement of renters, while helping landlords get the funds needed to pay their mortgages and maintain their properties."

Under the program, landlords may also apply by submitting tenant information, a valid W-9 form and ledgers outlining the back rent that is owed. A landlord application may not be submitted without the tenant's participation, officials said.

Landlords of people who apply will be contacted to confirm approved payment amounts prior to payment being sent, according to the county.

Bucks County officials say there was a soft launch of the program earlier this month and that they already have gotten hundreds of applications, with more on the way. They are encouraging applicants to be patient while submissions are processed and reviewed.

Anyone with questions about eligibility for the program or the application process can call the BERA help line between 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, at 888-50-BUCKS.

Currently, Pennsylvania has an eviction moratorium through March 31 for qualifying tenants who present a completed declaration form to their landlords.
