"Homer loved the fire company. When he was a junior firefighter, he was named chief of all the junior firefighters at the time," the fire company said.

He would drive the tractor with his dad from the fields to answer fire calls back in the early days.

There will be no service as Hall and his wife Donna decided years ago to donate his body to science.

The Hartsville Fire Company was planning to observe a moment of silence to remember Hall at its March business meeting.

"We also offer our condolences to his wife Donna, his sons Steve and Scott as well as his brother Dale," the fire company said.
