HARRISBURG, PA — A new bill proposed by a Bucks County lawmaker would protect Pennsylvania workers who have to take time off during public health crises like the new coronavirus outbreak.

State Sen. Steve Santarsiero announced the legislation Monday afternoon. It would prevent employers from punishing or firing employees when they must take leave for quarantine or isolation.

"Currently, there is no law in Pennsylvania that protects an employee from termination if placed under quarantine or isolation during a declared public health emergency," Santarsiero said. "No one should have to fear losing their job when they are forced to take the necessary precautions to prevent the spreading of viruses, for the sake of their own well-being and the health of the public."

Introduced on Monday, the legislation has bipartisan support, according to Santarsiero. Santarsiero is a Democrat and at least one of the bill's co-sponsors, Sen. Bob Mensch, is a Republican.

At an event announcing the bill, Santarsiero was joined by Tom Tosti, president of the Bucks County Council AFL-CIO.

"This is important for all workers across the state, to know that their jobs are safe while they’re in this required quarantine or isolation," Tosti said.

Santarsiero also announced that, on Thursday, March 12, he'll be hosting a telephone town hall on the topic of the coronavirus. Doctors Umar Farooq and Michael Kimzey also will be on the call.

Constituents may listen in live on their phones, computers or tablets and may submit questions by visiting Santarsiero's website.
