Trolley History Presentation Thursday In Yardley

An author will share the history of trolley travel in Bucks County and the borough at the Yardley Historical Association program.

YARDLEY BOROUGH, PA — The stories of “Trolleys in Bucks County and Yardley” will be presented by author Mike Szilagyi at a program sponsored by the Yardley Historical Association on Thursday.

The presentation will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Old Library by Lake Afton, 46 West Afton Avenue.

Szilagyi wlll share his knowledge and photographic images of the golden age of trolleys, which he gained by compiling his book, “Bucks County Trolleys,” part of the “Images of Rail” series, organizers said.

For 60 years, between the waning of the horse and buggy era and the widespread use of automobiles and trucks, fast and convenient electric trolleys were the best mode of transportation for both local passengers and freight.

Bucks County was served by 120 miles of trolley lines between the 1890s and the 1950s.

Information about the equipment, operators, users, and the routes will be sprinlked with information specific to Yardley.

The borough's residents could take a trolley in any direction but east, and a powerhouse, now the Cramer Bakery/CVS building provided electricity for the line.
