2nd Human Case Of West Nile Virus Detected In Rhode Island In 2025

The person has recovered, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health.

Rhode Island's second human case of West Nile virus in 2025 has been detected, the state's Department of Public Health reported.

"A person in their 50s from Providence County has tested positive for WNV," the department of health said in a media release.

The positive result was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday, according to the release.

The person's onset of symptoms began in early October," the release said. "They have since recovered."

The department of health reported the first human case Sept. 25.

The risk of contracting a mosquito-borne illness remains until the entire state "experiences a true hard frost," according to the release, defining the condition as " three consecutive hours below 32 degrees."

About one in five people infected with West Nile virus develop a fever and other symptoms, the release said, and approximately "one out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness."
