54 Rhode Island DUI Arrests Over Thanksgiving Weekend

The state's 38 police departments and state police combined to make the 54 arrests, according to the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association.

Rhode Island police made 54 driving under the influence arrests during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association.

"This figure represents the combined efforts of all 38 municipal police departments and the Rhode Island State Police," the police chiefs association said in a media release.

The arrests were made between noon Wednesday and 6 a.m. Monday.

"Every impaired driver we removed from the roadway this Thanksgiving holiday period represents a potential tragedy that was prevented," Thomas Oates, president of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association and Woonsocket chief of police, said in the release.

"Driving under the influence is not a mistake," Oates said. "It is a dangerous, illegal choice that puts everyone on the road at risk. Law enforcement across the state remains united in our commitment to hold impaired drivers accountable, and I am proud of the dedicated efforts of our officers throughout this holiday period."
