Firefighters Rescue Dog Trapped In Freezing Rhode Island Pond
The dog was out for a walk with its owner when it fell through the ice.
MISQUAMICUT, RI — Firefighters rescued a pet dog trapped in a frozen pond New Year's Day.
Misquamicut firefighters, the Westerly Ambulance Corps and Westerly police officers were dispatched to Little Masachaug Pond off Atlantic Avenue for a water rescue about 9 a.m. Thursday, Misquamicut posted to its Facebook page.
"A dog out for a morning walk with his owner wandered onto the pond and fell through a thin layer of ice near the center," the post said.

Assistance was requested from the Watch Hill Fire Department, which responded with ice rescue equipment, according to the post.
The dog, Phoenix, a yellow Labrador, was "struggling in the water and unable to move with his owner safely on shore," the post said.

Firefighters "quickly donned ice rescue suits and entered the pond, making a swift and successful rescue, while additional personnel prepared equipment, including an inflatable rescue boat," the post said. "Phoenix and the rescuers were safely brought back to shore and were all doing well when on scene."
Firefighters were evaluated for possible hypothermia but did not require treatment, according to the post.
