Hasbro Allowing Fans To Bring 1 Monopoly Token Out Of Retirement

The Rhode Island-based company is letting fans vote for the thimble, wheelbarrow and more. Which classic Monopoly piece is your favorite?

PAWTUCKET, RI — Monopoly, perhaps America's most classic board game, is getting a refresh.

Rhode Island-based toy company Hasbro, which has owned the rights to the game since 1991, is changing the tokens. But fans of Monopoly will get to preserve one of the game's classic tokens by voting one out of retirement.

The thimble, wheelbarrow, iron, boot, horse and rider, or money bag all have a chance to return to Monopoly. Fans worldwide can go to the game's website to choose one of the throwback tokens popularized in the 1990s that they'd like to see continue for the next generation of Monopoly players. Voting will last three weeks and conclude with Hasbro revealing the results.

"We know that fans across the globe have been missing the tokens of their childhood, and now is the chance to take a trip down memory lane and bring one back!" said Adam Biehl, the general manager for Hasbro Gaming. "We're so thrilled to give fans the opportunity once again to change the global best-selling board game through the Monopoly Throwback Token vote, but which iconic token will emerge victorious and which current token will go into retirement?"

The winning token will get an update in the new version of Monopoly, hitting shelves in fall 2022 in the U.S. and spring 2023 globally.
