More West Nile Virus Samples Turn Up In Rhode Island

Three more samples tested positive for West Nile virus, the state announced.

Three more mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile virus, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced.

The three samples collected Aug. 12 and tested the Rhode Island State Health Laboratories bring the total number found in the state this year to five.

The Aug. 12 samples were found in East Providence, Westerly and West Greenwich, the department of environmental management said in a media release. The previous samples turned up in East Providence and Bristol.

West Nile virus is the main mosquito-borne disease in the US, according to the Department of Environmental Health.

"While most people with WNV don’t get sick, about one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms," the release said. "There are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people."
