Rhode Island Baby's Botulism Case Just 1 In 12 State Outbreak: RIDOH

ByHeart has now recalled all ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula products due to the botulism outbreak, RIDOH reported.

The Rhode Island baby infected with botulism last month was just one case in a 12 state outbreak, the Rhode Island Department of Health reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that there have been 15 cases — all involving hospitalizations — due to the botulism outbreak linked to infant formula.

On Tuesday, ByHeart recalled all of its ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula products, according to the CDC.

"Do not use any ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula," the CDC warned. "This includes formula sold in cans and single serve packets."

If your infant has consumed ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula and exhibits poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing or decreased facial expression, seek immediate medical attention for the child, the CDC said.

Symptoms of infant botulism can several weeks to develop, so parents should remain vigilant if they used ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula, according to the CDC.

The Rhode Island Department of Health said all Ocean State clinicians should immediately report suspected cases of infant botulism and begin treatment as soon as possible.

"Infant botulism happens when a baby swallows Clostridium botulinum spores that grow in the gut and make toxins," according to the department of health. "Infant botulism symptoms can include constipation, poor feeding, drooping eyelids, weak cry, and muscle weakness."
