Rhode Island Correctional Officer Evaluated After Contact With Mystery Powder
The powder turned up in the mail, an official said.

CRANSTON, RI — A white mystery powder mailed to the Adult Correctional Institutions' maximum security facility set off the security protocol, an official said.

“This morning at the Maximum Security facility an unknown white powdery substance was found inside a piece of correspondence in the mailroom, which activated our safety and security protocol," J.R. Ventura, the chief of information and public relations/public information officer for the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, said in an email.

"Out of an abundance of caution and per our security protocol, the Correctional Officer handling the mail was evaluated by medical staff," Ventura said. "Preliminary testing results on the material determined that it poses no danger."

The powder remains unidentified.

"The substance will be tested at the State Health Laboratories," Ventura said. "Security staff and Cranston Fire cleared the scene, and the facility was declared safe to continue its operations.”
