Rhode Island Finds 1st West Nile Sample Of 2025

The sample was collected in East Providence, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island's found its first sample of West Nile virus this year in East Providence, the state's Department of Environmental Management reported.

"The virus was found in a mosquito sample collected by DEM in East Providence on July 21 and tested by the Rhode Island State Health Laboratories," a media release from the department said.

"The other mosquito samples collected statewide showed no signs of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus, Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV), or additional WNV," the release said.

West Nile virus is the main mosquito-borne disease in the US, according to the Department of Environmental Health.

"While most people with WNV don’t get sick, about one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms," the release said. "There are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people."
