Rhode Island MLK Holiday Commission Accepting Entries For Essay Contest

Four contest winners will be chosen.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. State Holiday Commission is accepting entries for its annual essay contest for the upcoming holiday event.

“The essay contest is a wonderful way to witness how Dr. King’s teachings and legacy remain impactful to the youth of today," Rep. Nathan W. Biah, who chairs the contest, said in a media release.

"It always brings me great hope to see his lessons inspire current and future generations, and I encourage all our state’s students to participate in this year’s contest,” said Biah, D-Providence.

Four winners — two middle school students and two high school students — will be chosen and prizes of $200 will be awarded to the first-place entries. A $100 prize will be awarded to the second-place entries. The contest is open to all middle and high school students in Rhode Island.

Middle school students are asked to write an essay about Dr. King’s belief in the power of forgiveness and reconciliation.

The deadline for applicants is Friday, Nov. 21.
