Rhode Island Resident Sentenced For Resisting 'Immigration Arrest'

The man, a Guatemalan national, was sentenced to time served, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A Guatemalan national who was living in Providence when he was taken into custody by immigration agents was sentenced to time served for resisting "immigration arrest," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations officers and "other supporting federal agents" arrested Cristian Aroldo Pineda Diaz, 31, in July, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a media release.

The officers spotted Pineda Diaz in downtown Providence and "attempted to execute an immigration arrest warrant," according to the release.

"Pineda Diaz refused verbal commands, attempted to flee, collided with a federal agent, and resisted efforts to gain control of his limbs, stiffening his body and concealing his arms under his body," the release said.

Pineda Diaz pleaded guilty Nov. 10, according to the release.
