Rhode Island's 1st 'Probable' Human Case Of West Nile Virus In 2025 Detected

The person remains hospitalized.

Rhode Island's first probable human case of West Nile virus in 2025 has been detected, the state's Department of Public Health reported.

"A person in their 60s from Providence County has tested positive for WNV and confirmatory testing will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Rhode Island Department of Health said in a media release.

"The person's onset of symptoms began in early September and they remain hospitalized," the release said.

So far, 13 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Department of Health. Positive samples have been located in Johnston, East Providence, Cranston, Westerly, West Greenwich and Bristol.

"Rhode Island’s risk level for WNV remains high statewide," the department's media release said.

"About one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms," the release said. "About one out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness."
