More than a third of Rhode Island's major roads are in poor condition, the study revealed.
Rhode Island's roads are the worst in America, a recent study revealed.
The study, conducted by researchers at Swiftdrain (the No. 1 trench drain company in the world, according to its website), relied on 10 Metrics, a media release said.

The 10 indicators of road quality and neglect ranged from pavement roughness and pothole complaints to bridge health, traffic volumes, and maintenance spending, according to the release.

Rhode Island turned out to be the worst state in the nation, the study revealed.
"With 37.2 percent of major roads in poor condition, the highest share in the country, and nearly 14% of bridges structurally deficient, the state’s aging infrastructure is showing its years. Despite moderate maintenance spending and a relatively low (heavy vehicle miles traveled) ... the roads continue to erode faster than repairs can keep up," the release said.

"A combination of harsh freeze-thaw cycles, dense traffic corridors, and longstanding repair backlogs likely contributes to the state’s ongoing struggles," according to the release.

Louisiana has the second-worst roads in America, the study determined, and the best belong to Delaware.
