Thanksgiving Grocery, Black Friday Retail Hours: What’s Open, Closed In RI

Most retail stores in Rhode Island are closed on Thanksgiving Day, subduing the midnight madness rush to stores that started early in the 21st century but were abandoned during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thanksgiving Day shopping never fully returned due to shifts in consumer behavior and demands from retail employees and the public to make Thanksgiving a day off for all.

One retailer, the outdoor outfitter REI, is closed both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. REI, which has stores in 44 states, including Rhode Island, has treated Black Friday as a paid holiday since 2015 as part of its #OptOutside tradition.

Most Grocery stores in Rhode Island are closed on Thanksgiving by state law. Only stores with less than six workers per shift are allowed to remain open.
