Unhealthy smoke from Canadian wildfires is expected to waft down to Rhode Island today, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

The DEM "forecasts that fine particle levels will reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups statewide today due to Canadian wildfire smoke," the department said in a media release.

"Heavy wildfire smoke will move into the region throughout Monday, the release said, "with fine particle readings increasing to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups on the Air Quality Index beginning in the early afternoon through the remainder of the day."

"Wildfire smoke contains tiny particles that can irritate eyes, nose, throat and lungs," the release said. "It can also worsen symptoms in individuals with asthma, lung or heart conditions.

The DEM recommended staying indoors with windows closed when smoke levels are high, limiting outdoor activity, choosing less strenuous activities and reducing time spent outdoors.

The department also suggested wearing a properly fitted N95 mask outside, and when driving, setting the vehicle's air system to recirculate.
