West Nile Virus Detected In 3 Rhode Island Towns

Eight samples have now been found in Rhode Island this year.

Mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus have been found in three more Rhode Island towns, the state's Department of Environmental Management announced.

The three samples collected Aug. 18 and tested at the Rhode Island State Health Laboratories bring the total number found in the state this year to eight, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

The Aug. 18 samples were found in Johnston, East Providence and Cranston, the department said in a media release.

Positive samples were previously located in Westerly, West Greenwich, twice in East Providence and Bristol.

West Nile virus is the main mosquito-borne disease in the US, according to the Department of Environmental Health.

"While most people with WNV don’t get sick, about one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms," the release said. "There are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people."
