Midterms Canceled At Barrington High School Amid Pandemic

Grading will work the same as it did during the 2020-21 school year, Principal Joseph Hurley said.

BARRINGTON, RI — Barrington High School canceled midterm exams for the semester, Principal Joseph Hurley said.

Hurley said the cancellation is because of the recent spike in coronavirus cases among students and staff at Barrington High School.

Hurley in an email to parents said grading will work the same as it did during the 2020-21 school year. The first semester grade will be divided evenly without the inclusion of midterm exams. The following grading structure will be used:

  • Quarter 1 (50 percent)
  • Quarter 2 (50 percent)

"With a high number of students needing to make up work, teachers will use the remaining days of the semester to provide additional time to complete work for Quarter 2," Hurley said. "Please note, this change impacts Semester 1 only. We will evaluate the final exam format for Semester 2 as the year progresses."

When asked about recent absences, Superintendent Michael Messore said they've been "very sporadic during the school year."

"For the majority of the year, our students have been attending school," Messore said.
