Bag Ban Workshop Scheduled for Tonight

The Bristol Town Council is scheduled to meet at 6:30 pm at Town Hall.

About a month after Bristol Town Councilman Timothy Sweeney proposed the idea, the council is scheduled to hold a workshop tonight to discuss a plastic bag ban at local stores.

Sweeney brought up the idea at the council's Jan. 23 session, and local residents seemed to be split over the idea — with one group saying the ban would protect wildlife and another arguing that a ban amounts to unwanted government control over businesses.

According to the agenda posted for tonight's meeting, Channing Jones of Environment RI — who also proposed the idea in Warren last year — is scheduled to speak on the issue.

Town Solicitor Michael A. Ursillo is also expected to discuss the Barrington ordinance which Bristol may use as a model.
