Call for Art: What Do You Think About When You See the Sea?
Ocean State of Mind Exhibit Invites Artists to Share Their Impressions of the Sea

BRISTOL, Rhode Island - The Bristol Art Museum and Rogers Free Library announce a call for art for a new juried, community exhibit that answers a relevant question for residents of Southeastern New England: What Do you Think About When you See the Sea? Works chosen will be featured in Ocean State of Mind, a community exhibit to be featured in the Community Galleries in the Rogers Free Library from Tues., May 23 to Thurs., Jul. 20, 2023. Local artist and art teacher Elizabeth O’Connell will serve as juror for this exhibit.
“Ocean State of Mind will feature artwork in which the artist expresses their impressions of seacoasts and ships, sand and sky, and creatures great and small,” said Amy Carreiro, Bristol Art Museum member and co-coordinator of Rogers Library exhibits. “This is an appropriate exhibit given our proximity to the ocean and how the sea defines our local culture and economy. The ocean has inspired countless artists with its beauty, ecosystem, and ability to unexpectedly transition from tranquil to distressed. In many ways, the ocean and its behavior is a metaphor for how we use our physical and mental fortitude to endure the unexpected challenges in our lives.”
Artists are invited to digitally submit their artwork online on the Bristol Art Museum website at http://www.bristolartmuseum.or... by Mon., May 8. The call for art welcomes drawings, paintings, printmaking, collage, photography, and two-dimensional fiber arts. Artwork submitted for consideration must not exceed 18 x 24 inches, inclusive of the frame. All artwork must be original and artists may make their works available for sale.
Elizabeth O’Connell is widely known in area art circles through classes she teaches on drawing and watercolor painting at the Bristol Art Museum, The Portsmouth Arts Guild, and Bristol’s Audubon Society. Watercolor is a natural medium for O’Connell given the inspiration she draws from nature. Her degrees are in Fine Art, Literacy, and Education. O’Connell has worked extensively in textiles and ceramics and is completing a Natural Science Illustration Certificate at the Rhode Island School of Design. She exhibits and sells her work in local galleries and at her studio in Warren.
