'Choose Chocolate': RI Animal Shelter Warns Against Bunnies For Easter

Live bunnies may seem like a cute choice for Easter baskets, but they're often abandoned once the eggs are found and chocolate unwrapped.

BRISTOL, RI — Easter is just a few days away, and a Rhode Island animal shelter is urging parents to think twice before putting a real bunny in a basket. The Bristol Animal Shelter reminded would-bed bunny owners that the animals are a big responsibility.

"Save a life, choose chocolate," the organization urged in a post on Facebook. "Every Easter, rabbits are given as gifts, but once the novelty wears off, they are too often neglected or abandoned."

Luckily, there are a wide variety of bunny-shaped chocolate and candy treats, most of which are just as cute as the real thing.

Thinking about getting a rabbit as a pet? Consider these tips from the Humane Society before taking home your new furry friend.

  • Adopt if possible.
  • Make sure you have plenty of room: rabbits shouldn't be kept outdoors, in too-small cages or in basements or garages.
  • Consider family fit: Rabbits like quiet environments and gentle handling, making them a not-so-great fit for small children.
  • Plan for expenses: consider veterinary costs, vegetables, food pellets, litter, habitat costs and other financial needs to make sure you can afford to meet the animal's needs.
  • Time commitment: Rabbits often live 10 years or more, so prepare for a long-term commitment.
