East Bay Lawmakers To Host Blood Drive At RI State House
Rep. June Speakman and Sen. Walter Felag Jr. will host the drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 15.
PROVIDENCE, RI ā Two East Bay lawmakers will host a blood drive at the Rhode Island State House Sept. 15. The drive comes as the Rhode Island Blood Center suffers from an extreme blood shortage, with just a few days' worth of supplies on hand at trauma centers.
The drive will be sponsored by Rep. June Speakman and Sen. Walter Felag, who cover Bristol, Warren and, in Felag's case, Tiverton.
"The blood supply in our region is currently at critically low levels," Felag said. "Itās concerning because it could leave us without the blood weād need if there were a significant trauma incident ... Every single donation makes a vital difference to a patient or patients in serious need, so donating is a simple act of kindness that allows ordinary people to become a hero."

Because space is limited, interested donors are asked to make an appointment in advance, using the sponsor code 0996. Walk-ins will be accepted if space allows.
"Donating blood is something that most healthy people can do at no cost to themselves that has tremendous value to cancer patients, accident victims and patients with other life-threatening health issues," Speakman said. "Itās a volunteer opportunity like no other, where the investment is small, but the benefit is immeasurable, and right now the need is extraordinary."

All donors are strongly encouraged to drink plenty of water and eat before their donation time. Masks will be required.
