One Of The Supremes Visits Roger Williams Law

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg held a "fireside chat" on Tuesday morning with students, professors and Judge Bruce M. Selya.

BRISTOL, RI – U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg visited Roger Williams University School of Law on Tuesday. Her appearance, billed as a 10 a.m. fireside chat, was open to students and faculty but not to the public. Some reporters were allowed in, but many were invited to watch over closed circuit television in overflow rooms. Ginsburg also set restrictions on close-up photographs and nixed a plan to live stream the event for remote locations.

Her topic, according to the school's press release, was "recounting how groundbreaking court rulings have helped to expand the concept of 'We the People.'" She maintained 'We the People' originally meant only white men who owned property. Over time, the term has been expanded to include the people originally left out.

First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Senior Judge Bruce M. Selya also participated. The event was part of RWU’s year-long series, ā€œTalking about Race, Gender and Power."
