Women's Equality Day on August 26th in the United States celebrates women’s rights activists and commemorates women's suffrage and equality in life and society.
According to Heidi Williamson, a senior policy analyst for the women’s health and rights program at a Washington-based advocacy organization -
- On August 26, 1920, “more than 26 million women had their citizenship affirmed and gained a mechanism to empower themselves, their families, and their communities,”
- The passage of the 19th Amendment, women not only gained the right to vote, but also “experienced economic progress…allowing more women to enroll in higher education and enter professional occupations.”
- Women continue to fight for equal rights, as wage gaps and gender discrimination persist in workplaces and business.
