Every year, Colombian Americans celebrate the anniversary of Colombia's 1810 independence from Spanish rule. "This year it has been 211 years since our homeland gained its freedom," the five said in a statement. "This celebration is a way to celebrate our culture, to show Rhode Island our rich history of coming to this country and to continue celebrating our heritage."
In addition to the state lawmakers, there are many local officials and leaders in Rhode Island who claim Colombian heritage. "We are honoring people from the community who have made contributions to the state and who are proud Colombian Americans,” the lawmakers said.
