85-Year-Old Woman Rescued From Water Following Coventry Crash

Police officers pulled her from the vehicle just seconds before it was completely submerged.

COVENTRY, RI — A woman was rescued from her car after it went off the Sandy Bottom Road bridge Tuesday morning, according to Coventry police.

The crash happened around 9:15 a.m. When first responders arrived, the car was partially submerged in the water, with the 85-year-old driver still inside, police said. Officers were able to pull her from the vehicle before it completely went under the water.

The woman said she was not injured at the scene, but was taken to the hospital to get checked out after firefighters got her back up the steep embankment. No firefighters or police were injured.

According to police, the woman was driving on Sandy Bottom when she swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle, "and may have accidentally accelerated into the river." The crash is still being investigated.
