Rhode Island Governor Cancels Holiday Open House In Wake Of Brown University Shooting

Gov. Dan McKee said he canceled the open house "out of respect for the Providence community and the victims of the shooting.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Gov. Dan McKee canceled his holiday open house at the Rhode Island State House in the wake of Saturday's mass shooting at Brown University.

"Out of respect for the Providence community and the victims of the horrific shooting at Brown University, the Holiday Open House scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Rhode Island State House has been canceled," the governor said in a media release.

"Our hearts and prayers continue to be with everyone impacted by this tragedy," he said.

Two students, MukhammadAziz Umurzokov and Ella Cook, were killed in the Saturday afternoon shooting and nine others injured.

A person of interest was detained Sunday but later released. The gunman remains at large.
