Concerned Coventry Taxpayer Changes Mind, Supports CCFD

John Assalone, once an outspoken critic of the CCFD, is asking residents to support proposed budget

Coventry, RI – One of the most vocal opponents of the Central Coventry Fire District, who previously called for the district to go into liquidation, is now asking registered district voters in to attend tonight’s budget meeting at Coventry High School and support the district’s proposed budget.

Assalone’s argument points out that residents will still pay taxes as well as legal costs, if the budget were to fail and if the district were to shut down. He also points out that change is already taking place at the CCFD: fire district board members have resigned and voters will soon have the opportunity to elect new ones so that the district make a fresh start.

“We appreciate what Mr. Assalone has observed in recent months – the fire district has been working to change itself for the better and we hope residents will consider Assalone’s new position. Tonight, taxpayers have a great opportunity to learn, ask questions, participate and assist the district and the town in moving in the right direction,” said David Gorman, president of Central Coventry Fire Fighters Local 3372. “My members agree with Assalone that if we agree to move forward together, rather than pass the blame around, we will be a better district."
