CHS Alumni Association Hall of Fame Inductee: Ted Szymkowicz

The second annual Hall of Fame induction will be held at Nino's on Lake Tiogue on March 28 at 6 p.m.

Ted Szymkowicz has made an unprecedented contribution to the athletic program at Coventry High School over a 50-year period as a student athlete, teacher, and coach. A 1955 graduate of Coventry High School, Ted played baseball and basketball for four years, leading the state in scoring in basketball (class C) and was selected First Team All-Kent County and was named the 1955 Outstanding Basketball Player in Kent County. Ted also received similar awards in baseball. As a senior, he was awarded the Babe Ruth Sportsmen Award at CHS.

Ted moved on after high school to play baseball, basketball, and golf at Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, PA and was selected the Outstanding Athlete for 1958.

In 1962 Ted returned to Coventry High School as an educator, teaching social studies and coaching for 34 years, until his retirement in 1996. During that time he coached basketball as assistant and head coach for 33 years, winning Coventry’s only Suburban Division State Championship in 1979-80 and was awarded the Outstanding Coaches Award. Ted also coached golf where he won the Western Division Championship in 1967 and 1968.

Appointed Athletic Director in his last three years at CHS, Ted also served as a baseball umpire and as a high school and college soccer official. A member of NISOA for over 40 years, Ted served as the state representative to the NE Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association for more than 20 years.
