Coventry: Fundraiser Planned For Grieving Family

Edward Lorenzen and son Michael, 4, died in a fire on Jan. 26. Two other children and the family dog escaped.

COVENTRY, RI — Edward Lorenzen, 47, and son Michael, 4, died on Jan. 26 when a fire swept through their Colonial Road home. But another son, Zacheri, 12, managed to escape. He also saved his sister, 2, and called for help. He told police his father and brother and their dog were still inside. Firefighters did rescue the family pet but were not in time to save little Michael and his father. Now, a local business is holding a flapjack fundraiser to help the Lorenzen family rebuild after the loss.

According to Jennifer Petrella, publicist for Applebee's of Coventry, the restaurant will hold a flapjack fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 8 to 10 a.m. Petrella said 100 percent of the money collected will go to the family. Tickets cost $10 for one customer (or $30 for four) and can be purchased at the restaurant, 830 Centre of New England Blvd., 02816. The deal includes pancakes, bacon and orange juice.
