Coventry police said the lockdown was necessary, so they can investigate a rumor.

COVENTRY, RI — Coventry High Schools is on lockdown Monday, according to police.
Police said the lockdown was necessary, so officers can investigate a rumor. A police spokesperson did not elaborate on the rumor, saying it's too early in the investigation to do so.
Principal Brook Macomber said the rumor was a threat heard in passing, which prompted the lockdown out of an abundance of caution.

"All students and staff are safe and secure in their classrooms with their teachers," Macomber said in a statement. "The CPD and State Police are in the process of searching all students, classrooms and belongings to ensure the safety of our school community."
Macomber asked parents not to pick up their students at school, as police will not allow cars to come in or out while they conduct their search. All parents who come to the high school to pick up students will be directed by the police to wait in a staging location at Ocean State Job Lot.
