Coventry High School Psychologist Dies Unexpectedly

Coventry High School psychologist Lou Ruffolo was a school psychologist for more than 23 years and also coached basketball and soccer.

COVENTRY, RI — Coventry High School psychologist Lou Ruffolo died unexpectedly, Superintendent Don Cowart said Monday.

Ruffolo was a school psychologist for more than 23 years and also coached the unified basketball and junior varsity boys soccer teams.

"His loss is deeply felt by the entire Coventry Public Schools community, and especially by Coventry High School," Cowart said in an email to parents. "Our hearts go out to his family during this incredibly difficult time. We kindly ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy as they navigate this profound loss."

Cowart canceled classes at Coventry High School on Tuesday, saying he made supporting students and staff the district's priority. When classes resume Wednesday, there will be clinicians, grief counselors, administrators, and additional counseling staff for anyone who needs it. Cowart said counselors will be available at the high school until 4 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.
