Coventry Opens Cooling Centers For This Week's Heatwave

With index indices approaching 104, see where you can stay safe from the heat in Coventry.

COVENTRY, RI — A scorching heatwave is hitting Rhode Island on Tuesday through Friday, so Coventry has opened cooling shelters to help resident stay safe.

Coventry has cooling centers open at any town police or fire station 24 hours a day. There will also be stations set up at the following locations:

  • Coventry Public Library at 1672 Flat River Road — open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday
  • Coventry Senior and Resource Center at 50 Wood St. — 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Because of Juneteenth, the library and senior center will be closed Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to reach the high 90s in some parts of the state, but the heat indices — a measure that combines humidity and air temperature — will make it feel much hotter outside.

Providence, Kent, and Bristol counties will all be under excessive heat watches with heat index values expected at 104 this week. Rhode Island cities and towns expected to be affected include Coventry, Smithfield, Providence, East Greenwich, Foster, West Greenwich, Bristol, West Warwick, Warwick, and the surrounding area.
