Cub Scouts Visit Battleship Cove

By John H. Potvin, Cubmaster Pack 11 Coventry

Cub Scout Pack 11, Coventry recently made a trip to Battleship Cove, in Fall River, Massachusetts, to explore the world’s largest collection of historic naval ships.

After touring the battleship Massachusetts, destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., submarine Lionfish, PT Boats 617 and 796, and the Russian missile corvette Hiddensee, the scouts, their parents, and adult leaders spent the night of May 4 onboard the famous battleship Massachusetts.

Battleship Cove’s "Nautical Nights" program which is in its 40th year, included a storyteller, major motion pictures, and the opportunity for scouts to meet and talk with a veteran who actually served on the battleship Massachusetts during World War II.

The trip has enabled the scouts to better understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by veterans of all military branches. Our trip to Battleship Cove is one of the highlights of the scouting year. Scouts really enjoy the opportunity to pretend that they are “manning the battle stations” and then spend the night in one of the bunks that sailors used in World War II.
