Five Things You Need To Know Today, April 15

Today is Monday, Apr. 15, 2013 and here are five things you should know about.

 

Happy April Vacation, Coventry families! This is the Spring Break edition of Five Things since there's quite a few kid-friendly activities going on in town this week. Enjoy!

"Project Chick" at CPL: Today at 10:30 a.m., Coventry Public Library is hosting guests from Casey Farm in Saunderstown who will teach participants ages 4 and up how chicks develop. Children will even get to meet a live chicken. Space is limited, call 822-9102 to check availability.

Pitch, Hit & Run: Coventry Parks & Recreation is holding its annual Pitch, Hit and Run competition on the Babe Ruth Field at Paine Field today! Pre-registration will take place at 10 a.m. with the competition immediately following. This free event is open to children ages 7-14 (as of July 17, 2013) of all skill levels and is based on batting, pitching and base running. Boys and girls will compete separately. Metal cleats are not allowed. This is a nationally sponsored competition with winners advancing to state and possibly regional and nation levels.

Youth Fishing Derby Registration: Register today for Coventry's Annual Fishing Derby scheduled for this Wednesday! The bus will leave the Community Center at 5:30 a.m. and return at 9 a.m. Kids ages 9-16 are eligible (ages 15-16 must have valid fishing license). Prizes will be given for largest fish, most fish and farthest cast. You must bring your own pole, bait and tackle. Cost is $2 per participant.

Greene Library Felt Frenzy: Today is your last chance to register for Greene Library's Felt Frenzy program, scheduled for Wednesday, Apr. 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. With some basic sewing skills and craft supplies, participants will have the opportunity to create some neat items like iPod cases, key charms and bookmarks. Call 397-3873 for more information and to register.

SNAP Outreach: The Coventry Senior Center (50 Wood St.) will hold a presentation at 11 a.m. today on qualifying for food stamps (aka SNAP). Robin from the RI Community Food Bank will discuss income guidelines and will also have applications available.
