Scammer Steals $100K In Online Romance Scam: Coventry Police

Police said recently, a victim was scammed out of over $100,000 by someone posing as "John William" on the dating site Plenty of Fish.

COVENTRY, RI — A Coventry police have urged residents to be on the lookout for online dating scams after a victim had over $100,000 stolen.

Police said recently, a victim was scammed out of over $100,000 by someone posing as "John William" on the dating site Plenty of Fish. According to police, the scammer convinced the victim to send money through gift cards, wire transfers, and Bitcoin over several months.

Coventry police urged residents to take caution when dating online and offered the following tips:
